Sony sees modest growth PS3, PSP dramatic decrease in sales in the second quarter compared to last year

Randy Nelson 2010 29 Oct 3: 12 AM Sony Corporation has released its report of earnings for the second quarter of its financial year 2010 and among the highlights was the performance of its Division into network products & services, which is composed of PlayStation and its PC offerings. Always a strong component of the company, the Division once again showed growth, bringing in ¥ 369 billion (4.6 billion) of revenue, the five percent by ¥ 352 billion ($ 4.3 billion) earned in the same period last year.

Looking at hardware, sales, PS3 shipments is increased slightly during the second quarter of 2009, totaling 3.5 million units compared to 3.2 million the year before, a change of 9.3%.In its report, Sony sues "strong performance of the PS3 hardware significant cost reductions and increased sales," elsewhere briefly mention that "sales benefited from the introduction of PlayStation moves in this quarter."PS3 software sales were up to 10 million units for neighborhood, or 40%, for a total of 35 million units against 25 million for the second quarter of 2009.

Yesterday Microsoft announced that shipments of Xbox 360 for the first quarter of its financial year 2011 were increased by 25 percent compared to the same time last year. While it may seem 360 is pummeling PS3, it is important to note that the console Sony hasn't seen a hardware upgrade since the PS3 slim the introduction last year; the Xbox 360 S launched just before Microsoft Q1 FY 2011.

Dunk your Sony picture report paints for the PSP is anything but encouraging.Handheld Sales dropped to 1.2 million units in the quarter, from 3 million in the same period in fiscal 2009, a decrease of 50% software PSP. sales were down--although much less dramatically--15 percent, with 11 million units sold during the quarter compared to 13 million in the prior year. Despite the lower performance of handheld this year against the last, Sony is just projecting an overall 20 percent drop in sales for the year, projecting sales of eight million units against 10 million in fiscal 2009. again, if the signs of a new platform in phone PlayStation wasn't enough to signal the end of the era of PSP, that these numbers only make it clearer.
